RV Travel Log

Open Letter to the State of Michigan: - 08/07/2003

Things that are Cool:

1. Tabor Hill Winery -- We've been here twice now, and I absolutely love their Classic Demi-Red. It may not be a super-sophisticated wine, and it may be a little sweet, but it's very drinkable and I like it. Besides, I think Cabernet Sauvignon tastes like balsa wood.

2. Blueberries -- Who knew that the best blueberry pie I would ever have would come from a Wal-Mart in Benton Harbor, MI? Plus, a carton of fresh blueberries is only $1.50, which is ridiculous.

3. The sand -- Sand in the area of Michigan we visited is glacial till. This means it's extremely fine and very pleasant to walk on, although your sand castles won't last more than a few minutes.

4. Beach Park at Ludington -- All City Parks ought to be like this; a beach, a jetty, a shuffleboard court, a snack bar, jet ski rentals, a nice little playground. We spent most of a day here, watched the ferry come in, and then saw the sunset from the lighthouse. Just lovely.

Things you need to fix pretty quick:

1. Holland, MI -- Okay, why are there no left turns? Who thought it would be safer/ more conveniet/ more aesthetically pleasing to do away with all left hand turns at intersections and instead add these stupid left u-turn lanes halfway down the road? Who really thought this made sense? What you are actually doing is confusing the hell out of all the tourists who are desperately attempting to FIND the left turn lanes and undoubtedly causing more accidents than you are preventing. Also, do you know what it's like to make a U-turn in a 21-foot RV? Your life flashes before your eyes.

2. Reservation only camping -- Okay, maybe I have a teensy bias against this, but really, is this helping you that much? From what I saw your parks still had to deal with a fairly steady stream of campers who didn't know they needed thir campsite 6 months in advance, soo you aren't cutting down on that. What was REALLy wrong with the 80-20 system?

3. Tourists -- I suppose this isn't really your fault, but the fact that we couldn't get a place to stay OR a table for dinner because everything in Ludington is taken/ reserved for the months of MAy-August is absurd.
