We found Holland! - 08/07/2003

Last night we stayed at Weko Beach in Bridgman, MI, just south of Benton Harbor. Camping was $20 and not worth it. It kind of felt like a trailer park; on the other hand, we had a 2 minute walk to the beach. We also visited 3 wineries in the area and picked raspberries. Yum.

We meandered north from here, along the coast, and came upon Holland, MI in the evening, which was too bad, as all the tourist shops had closed already. They had a family adventure park / tourists shops village thingy called "Dutch Village" that *actually* vaguely resembled a Dutch town. It was way too manicured for Amsterdam, but rather neat nonetheless. Canels, wooden shoes, Dutch street names, etc.

We stopped in the Muskegon, MI Wal-Mart for the night, then went to P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, where we tried to get a campsite but were told all 247 sites were filled. Apparently, this state has recently started allowing reservations for 100% of all camping sites in the state parks; it used to be 80% reservable and 20% first come, first served. This is not a good change for us wanderers. The beach was nice though.
