Tourists love 59 degree water - 08/09/2003

Ludington, MI. Weather: 70 degrees, partly cloudy, nice breeze, no humidity. Water: 59 degrees.

I'm typing this from the RV parked at the public beach in Ludington, MI where we spent a lovely evening in the Wal-Mart parking lot. There isn't a single campsite available in this town, and from all the "No Vacancy" signs, it appears the hotels are filled as well. We wanted to have dinner last night at the Jamesport Brewing Company, but there was an hour and a half wait for a table of 2. It appears we stumbled into the tourist mecca of western central Michigan.

I'm sitting here overlooking a big beautiful beach of fine sand, exapansive blue waters, with sand dunes to the north and a lighthouse on a pier in front of me. Behind me in the park are shuffleboard courts and a beach playground. Except for the severe lack of accomodations, this is a wonderful town.

I really want to go swimming, but 59 degrees is too freaking cold, particularly with a chill wind and only moderate sun. We went swimming down the coast in the Benton Harbor area, where the air was warmer and possibly also the water. After a few minutes in the surf, your body parts start to go numb and the water doesn't feel nearly as cold.

Ludington also happens to be the only location one can cross Lake Michigan on a ferry, over to Manitowac, WI. The really play up the S.S. Bader as the family fun ferry, with movies and food and sleeping accomodations. They also have roundtrip pleasure cruises. What kind of ferry is this? Anyway, we checked on the price. $47/person, 1 way, plus $5.75/foot for RVs. That equates to over $200 for us and the RV. This is probably the only time I can say this: it would be cheaper to drive the RV around to Michigan at 10 mpg.
