San Juan Skyway - 10/20/2003
Erin and I borrowed a Suburban yesterday and embarked on a 2 day journey through the mountains. We actually ended up following a semi-official "scenic byway" called the San Juan Skyway. Parts of it are also known as the Million Dollar Highway drive. We went from Cortez to Dolores, Rico, Telluride, Ridgway, Ouray, Silverton, Durango, and back home. I think it's a 230 mile loop.
And wow, what a beautiful drive. The aspen trees are all bright yellow/orange this time of the year and moutains are especially tall (ok, not really, they're the same height as ever). I would have been terrified on some of these roads with the RV, so I'm very happy we were able to borrow the Suburban. What 9else did we do besides see pretty things and drive up and down mountain roads?
* We saw the ghost town of Alta. It was 4 miles off the highway up a steep, narrow, 1 lane gravel road. The town was really a cluster of collapsed buildings. Cool, but a not movie-quality ghost town. We saw a beaver dam on the way up the mountain.
* Telluride is a nice, expensive place. We rode the free gondola up the mountain... and back down again.
* Ouray, CO is beautiful.
* The road from Ouray to Silverton is, um, terrifying. I think this is the part known as the Million Dollar Highway, probably because you had to pay people that much to drive it originally.
* We went rock climbing in Durango at X-Rock. It was pretty cool -- the place it basically inside the town limits, they have marked parking for it, and the approach is only 5 easy minutes.
Pictures will be coming soon.
